A garage workbench isn’t meant to be delicate drawing room showpiece furniture. It is meant for rough use and should be solid, sturdy and rough and tough. But to build one such requires patience and a long time and quite a bit of labor.
LIST OF MATERIALS
4 metal angled brackets for providing support
For support bracing 5 2x4x10’
Half pounds each of 1 ¼” wood screw, 10 penny nails, number 16 spikes
24 lag bolts to support the angles
For the top surface a piece of ½” particle board @ 4x10
If you want you can also add 3 inch overhangs in the back and front. Nine inches can be the length of right and left overhangs. The bottom and top braces will measure 2x4. The top will sit on a frame that will be made from a leg stock measuring 2x4. Always make it a point to purchase straight support braces. If they are twisted, bowed or warped, problems will arise while assembling. Screws and bolts are more preferable than nails which grow loose after a point of time.
PROCEDURE
Start off by constructing 2 similar 2x4 frames for stabilizing the legs
To build the four legs take the help of 4x4s or 2x4s. Adjust the height to suit your needs. Attach the legs to the inner corner of one frame.
To attach the legs you will require the screws and bolts.
A minimum of 4 bolts or screws should be used at each of the corners. 2 of them will be fixed to one side.
After attaching all the four legs by turning the first frame upside down, attach the second frame (if you want to prevent the legs from spreading and also a shelf to store items) and remember to notch the corners of plywood. This will ensure a better fit round the legs.
After completing the base, work on the top that will be made of plywood with measurements of your choice, position it on top of the base at the centre and use short screws and L brackets to attach it.
Now add standard ¾ inch thick hardwood flooring for a finishing touch. You might only want your garage to be practical be you should also consider garage color ideas.
